Challenge

Construction projects frequently experience substantial rework costs, which can often reach over 20% of the total project budget. The primary cause of these rework expenses is poor visualization and communication during the design process, leading to the failure of architects to identify design conflicts before construction begins.

As the project progresses, reworks become increasingly expensive, making early recognition of potential issues in the design process crucial for cost containment.

Solution

SpearXR developed an easy-to-use Augmented Reality (AR) design visualization tool as a free app for the iPad. The app allows users to start by uploading a simple 2D floor plan and then adding 3D assets, BIM elements, and information nodes in AR.

The AR visualization helps bridge the gap between stakeholders' imaginations, reducing delays and speeding up the approval process. By using the tool, architects, builders, and stakeholders can benefit from a more efficient and streamlined design and construction process.

Outcome

Visualizing designs in Augmented Reality (AR) offers a significant advantage to project managers by enabling the early identification of points of conflict, ultimately reducing rework costs. The 3D visualization of building plans allows designers to avoid potential design conflicts, which can be costly and time-consuming to resolve later in the project.

The use of AR technology streamlines the design process, increasing efficiency and reducing the risk of costly reworks. By utilizing AR for design visualization, project managers and designers can ensure a smooth and successful construction project from start to finish.
